Imbolc

Imbolc celebrates the first stirrings of spring and marks the midpoint between winter solstice and spring equinox. This sabbat honors Brigid, Celtic goddess of fire, healing, and poetry, as the landscape begins its slow awakening from winter’s slumber. It’s a time of purification, inspiration, and initiation, when we kindle the spark of creativity and nurture the seeds of our intentions for the coming spring. The festival celebrates the return of light, both literal and metaphorical, as days continue to lengthen.

History & Origins

Traditionally celebrated by the Celts, Imbolc (meaning “in the belly” or “ewe’s milk”) marked the beginning of the lambing season and first signs of spring. The holiday was deeply connected to the goddess Brigid, so significant that when Christianity spread through Celtic lands, she was transformed into Saint Brigid rather than erased. Ancient celebrations included the tending of sacred flames, weather divination, and ritual cleansing. Farmers would assess their resources, hoping to last until spring, while households performed thorough cleansings to welcome the new season.

Modern Celebrations

Contemporary practitioners honor Imbolc through spring cleaning, both physical and spiritual. Many create Brigid crosses from rushes or straw, light candles in every room, and perform house blessings. It’s traditional to create a Bride’s Bed (a small bed made of basket or cloth) and invoke Brigid’s blessings. Practitioners often focus on creative projects, healing work, and divination. Home purification rituals, candle magic, and the blessing of seeds for spring planting are common practices.
